Rita Curtis - Biography

I love fast and loose — at least when it comes to paintings. I want my paintings to look as though they were whipped out in a flash of inspiration. The truth is I work thoughtfully — designing, reworking, and simplifying passages until I feel my work looks fresh.  I prefer to work in the studio but occasionally get out and mix it up en plain air with those hardy souls who love to brave the elements.

My heart is with impressionism, but my background is classical. I learned from 20th masters at the Art Student's League of New York — Frank Mason, David Leffel, Robert Beverly Hale. My palette, after years of personal development, has evolved into lighter, brighter, and higher key.

Recognition has been steadily growing.  "The Writer" was given full page coverage in International Artist magazine and won a major award in the Fifteenth national Oil Painters of America show. My work has also received awards in national competitions including The Artists magazine, Raymar Art, and BoldBrush. A recent proponent of plein air painting, I've been juried into Paint Annapolis for the last two years and was awarded Best of Show at last year's Solomons, Maryland plein air festival.

Way back I studied intellectual history at New York University and literature and art in Perugia, Italy. I spent a few decades at Johns Hopkins University designing and illustrating publications. Many of those illustrations are in manuals worldwide produced by the World Health Organization. Images and colors from my travels to Africa and Asia suffuse many of my  paintings.
